Senator Schumer: Anti-Semitism in America Has Reached a 'Critical Point'

Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate, warned on Wednesday, November 29, about the rise of anti-Semitism in America since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war, stating it has reached a 'critical point' that threatens the security of Jews worldwide. Schumer said, 'For us Jews, the rise of anti-Semitism is a crisis and a fire that must be extinguished.' He emphasized that he neither accepts the policies of the Israeli government nor ignores the problems of Palestinians. The U.S. Senate is set to review legislation next week to assist both Israel and Ukraine, both of which are at war. Meanwhile, multiple protests have erupted in the U.S. and other countries against Israeli attacks in Gaza, which began following Hamas's assault on southern Israel on the 15th. Schumer, a Democrat and the highest-ranking elected Jewish official in the United States, asserted that criticizing the actions of the Israeli government does not equate to anti-Semitism. He also stated that he does not intend to pit one group against another and believes that prejudice against one group of Americans is prejudice against all. Following his speech, Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, who often disagrees with Schumer on current events, praised his remarks, saying, 'I agree with him in condemning this hatred.' The Anti-Defamation League, which fights against anti-Semitism and other forms of hate, announced last month that incidents related to anti-Semitism in America increased by approximately 400 percent in the two weeks following Hamas's attack and the onset of hostilities. Israel claims that Hamas killed about 1,200 people, ranging from infants to grandparents. Health officials in Gaza also report that 14,800 people have died in the Israeli attacks on Gaza, with four out of ten of them being children. Schumer noted that although Jews make up only 2 percent of the U.S. population, they are the target of 55 percent of religiously motivated crimes recorded by the FBI. He stated that American Jews feel isolated and alone. Schumer referenced centuries of attacks on Jews worldwide, mentioning the deaths of his grandmother and other relatives by the Nazis in 1941. He urged American Jews not to be blamed for the actions of the Israeli army in Gaza. In a note for the New York Times, he referred to boycotts and sabotage against Jewish-owned businesses that 'have no connection to Israel' and the harassment of Jewish students on campuses. He wrote, 'We will not allow criticism of Israel to morph into something different, such as denying the existence of a Jewish state or openly calling for the destruction of Israel.' Schumer also pointed out that Arab Americans are witnessing a rise in Islamophobia and 'horrific crimes' such as the tragic murder of a 6-year-old child, experiencing similar fears. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has caused divisions in the U.S. Congress, with only about 32 Democratic members supporting calls for a complete ceasefire. Israel views this as an opportunity for Hamas members to reorganize. A warning from the German domestic intelligence agency stated that the Gaza war has created new anti-Semitic alliances. Ali Khamenei and the Islamic Republic are included in the Bild newspaper's campaign against 'anti-Semitism.' There is an increase in threats against Jews, Muslims, and Arab Americans; the U.S. Attorney General stated, 'We are committed to prosecuting offenders.'
