Senior Hamas Member Killed in Israeli Attack in Southern Lebanon

Reports indicate that a senior official of the Palestinian armed group Hamas was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a vehicle deep in Lebanon. Reuters reported on Friday, August 9, citing a Hamas source and two other security sources, that in this attack, Samer Al-Haj, a Hamas security official working in a Palestinian refugee camp near Ain al-Hilweh, was killed. According to this report, the attack occurred on the southern outskirts of the port city of Sidon, located 60 kilometers from the Lebanon-Israel border. The three sources told Reuters that Samer Al-Haj's bodyguard was also severely injured. The Israeli army has carried out attacks against members of Hamas, Hezbollah, and other armed factions in Lebanon over the past ten months, coinciding with the war in Gaza. These groups target northern Israel with rockets, drones, and artillery attacks from across the border, while most clashes have been concentrated along the Israel-Lebanon border. Israeli attacks targeting senior officials of Hezbollah, Hamas, and other groups have occurred in the northern regions. In an Israeli attack on the outskirts of Beirut last January, Saleh Al-Arouri, the deputy head of Hamas's political branch, was killed. Another Israeli strike in the same area last week killed Fawad Shukr, a senior military commander of Hezbollah. Hours after Fawad Shukr's death, Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas's political office in Tehran, was killed. The Islamic Republic of Iran and its regional allies, including Hezbollah and Hamas, have blamed Israel and vowed to take revenge. Many countries are trying to reduce tensions in the region that could lead to a comprehensive war. The Israeli security cabinet met on Thursday night, August 9, local time in Tel Aviv, as the country prepared for a potential attack from Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group. At the same time, Israel's defense minister warned the people of Lebanon that if Hezbollah continues to 'escalate tensions,' Israel will confront this group 'with full force.' According to the 'Times of Israel,' the security cabinet met in the underground command room at the 'Kriya' military headquarters, marking the first such meeting since the Iranian drone and missile attack at midnight on April 14 of this year. The meeting was reportedly held as a 'drill for a potential emergency situation.' Meanwhile, Yoav Galant, Israel's defense minister, warned on Thursday in a message in Arabic on social media 'X' to the people of Lebanon that if Hezbollah continues to 'escalate tensions,' Israel will 'fight this group with full force.' He wrote: 'The Israeli government seeks to establish peace, prosperity, and stability on both sides of the border with Lebanon and will therefore not allow Hezbollah militants to destabilize the border and the region.' Mr. Galant also referred to the 'regret' of Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, after the 'dangerous and uncalculated adventure of August 2006,' urging the people of Lebanon to 'remember' it. The defense minister's reference was to the 34-day conflict that began with the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah forces. He added: 'Those who play with fire should expect destruction.' Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced on the battlefield on Thursday that its fighter jets and drones conducted several attacks in southern Lebanon, targeting an operational cell, a rocket launcher, buildings used by Hezbollah, and other infrastructure of this group in five areas. According to the 'Times of Israel,' the country has been preparing for an attack from this group since Fawad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, was killed in Beirut. At the same time, Israel has faced threats from the Iranian government for retaliatory action following the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran, although this country has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's death. According to Channel 12 of Israeli television, the army is prepared to respond significantly to an attack wherever necessary, 'not just in Lebanon.' The report also stated that the United States has increased its military presence in the region, sending more fighter jets and warships to the Middle East to counter threats from Iran and its proxy groups. Additionally, Washington is advancing extensive diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region.
