Senior Russian Official's Visit to Iran Amidst Escalating War Risks in the Middle East

Following the rising likelihood of military conflict between the Islamic Republic and Iran after the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, Sergei Shoigu, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, arrived in Iran on Monday, August 6, for talks with senior officials of the Islamic Republic, including the President and high-ranking security officials. Russia condemned the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Iran last week, and called on all parties to refrain from actions that could plunge the Middle East into a broader regional war. According to Reuters, the Russian television network Zvezda aired images of Sergei Shoigu, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, meeting with Ali Akbar Ahmadian, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The report stated that Shoigu, who was the Minister of Defense of Russia before moving to the National Security Council in May, would also meet with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and the Chief of Staff of the Army. Although Putin has not yet publicly commented on the escalating tensions in the Middle East, senior Russian officials have stated that those behind Haniyeh's assassination are seeking to eliminate any hope for peace in the region and draw the U.S. into military action there. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Russia has established closer relations with the Islamic Republic and has stated that it is preparing to sign a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Iran. The United States and its allies, including the European Union, have imposed numerous sanctions on individuals, companies, and various entities in the Islamic Republic of Iran and elsewhere in the world due to their roles in transferring weapons and military technology to Russia, as well as sending drones and missiles to 'militant groups and entities undermining peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea.'
