Serious Risk of Execution for Mujahid Korkori; Amnesty International Warns

Amnesty International issued a statement warning of the serious risk of executing Mujahid (Abbas) Korkori. In the statement released on Wednesday, July 7, the organization criticized the holding of a 'sham and severely unjust trial' and the issuance of the death sentence based on 'forced confessions under torture' of the accused. This international body has called on Gholamhossein Mohseni Eje'i, the head of the judiciary, to take immediate action to annul the death sentence of Mujahid Korkori. Abbas Korkori, known as Mujahid Korkori, was arrested a month after the killing of Kian Pirfalak in Izeh, accused of 'murdering this 9-year-old child.' Despite the Pirfalak family's insistence on not filing a complaint against Mujahid Korkori, judicial authorities issued a death sentence against him on charges including 'moharebeh' (waging war against God) and 'ifsad fil-arz' (corruption on earth). Meanwhile, Amnesty International, in its letter to the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Eje'i, pointed out that according to its investigations, plainclothes security agents were responsible for the fatal shooting of Kian Pirfalak. The Pirfalak family has repeatedly emphasized that this child was killed by gunfire from security agents. Amnesty International also detailed how Mujahid Korkori was arrested during an armed raid by government agents and his 'enforced disappearance.' According to this human rights organization, Mujahid Korkori, who was injured in the arm and knee during his arrest, was deprived of medical services during detention. Amnesty International noted the lack of access to a chosen lawyer for Mujahid Korkori and described his 'forced confessions' under torture, calling his trial 'severely unjust.' This human rights organization also described the arrest of Negar Korkori, Mujahid's sister, as 'arbitrary,' stating that her only crime was defending her brother's rights. Amnesty International has called for the immediate annulment of Mujahid Korkori's death sentence and the release of Negar Korkori, urging the Iranian judiciary to provide opportunities for family visits, access to a chosen lawyer, and medical services for Mujahid Korkori. Raha Bahreini, a researcher on Iran at Amnesty International, previously stated to the Persian section of Voice of America about the increase in executions in Iran that the Islamic Republic has many people on death row, and global pressure to counter this must be increased. The mother of Mujahid Korkori, a death row inmate, pleaded for help, stating that her days and nights are dark. There is no news about Mujahid Korkori's sister following the government's attack on their family home. The Revolutionary Court accused eight detained protesters in Izeh of 'moharebeh and ifsad fil-arz.' The Islamic Republic sentenced one person to death for the killing of Kian Pirfalak; the Pirfalak family stated that Mujahid Korkori is not the killer. Government forces attacked Izeh villages with 'RPGs' and 'grenades'; the risk of execution for a detainee remains.
