Serious Warning from Iranian Destroyer to American Aircraft in Gulf of Aden

Iran's state news agency reported that on Monday, April 3, an Iranian destroyer issued a "serious warning" to two American aircraft and an American destroyer in the Gulf of Aden, instructing them to maintain a "standard five-mile distance" from the Iranian destroyer. According to the news agency, an American destroyer and reconnaissance aircraft responded positively to the warning from Iran's Destroyer 72 Alborz and "changed course." The report also noted that American ships and aircraft have been seen multiple times around Iran's Navy Group 34 in the Gulf of Aden, but no warnings were issued to the Alborz destroyer and Bushehr ship. Over the past two days, American destroyers and reconnaissance aircraft have been observed near Iran's Navy Group 34, quickly leaving the scene after the warning from Destroyer 72 Alborz. Meanwhile, Mustafa Tajeddini, commander of Navy Group 34 of the Iranian Army, stated that Iranian ships are present in international waters and that American naval groups "do not have the right to warn Iran." Habibollah Sayyari, commander of the Iranian Navy, confirmed that Navy Group 34 is present in the Gulf of Aden with the Alborz destroyer and the logistics ship Bushehr. Previously, international media reported that nine Iranian warships suspected of carrying weapons for Houthi rebels in Yemen returned to Iran after the presence of the U.S. Navy fleet led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the waters around Yemen. However, the commander of the Iranian Navy denied these reports and emphasized the continued presence of Iranian ships in the Gulf of Aden. Meanwhile, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, stressed that Iran "will not allow" Yemen to be besieged like Gaza and will continue its so-called "humanitarian" assistance to the country. In an interview with the Al-Manar network, affiliated with Hezbollah, he added: "Evidence confirms that terrorists in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen are in contact with some security apparatuses in the region." Meanwhile, Marzieh Afkham, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, referred to the "siege" of Yemen as an "inhumane scenario." She emphasized that the continued obstruction by Saudi Arabia against the entry of humanitarian aid has led to severe shortages of essential medical and treatment supplies, drinking water, bread, and food in the country. Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, especially in recent weeks, have soured over Yemen, and the Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Saudi chargé d'affaires in Tehran twice in the past two weeks to protest against attacks on the Houthis and to prevent the landing of Iranian aircraft in Sana'a. Iran is accused of providing military support to the Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, to the extent that Barack Obama, the President of the United States, stated on Tuesday, April 21, that "the U.S. has warned Iran in a direct message to refrain from sending weapons to Yemen that could threaten maritime security in the region." On the other hand, the U.S. Navy has recently begun escorting commercial ships flying the U.S. flag in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in response to the seizure of a cargo ship flying the Marshall Islands flag by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, Iran claims that security in the region is "completely established" and that there is no need for U.S. naval escorts for ships. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Pentagon officials stated that the U.S. fundamentally sees the problem in Iran's behavior in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
