Seventeenth Year of Zahra Jalalian's Imprisonment; HRANA: Opposition to Her Transfer to Medical Facilities Continues

A human rights source reported the continuation of "lack of medical attention" for Zahra Jalalian's condition, stating that prison officials in Yazd oppose this political prisoner's repeated requests for transfer to medical facilities outside of prison. According to a report on Sunday, August 5, by HRANA, the media organ of human rights activists in Iran, a source close to Zahra Jalalian's family confirmed that this political prisoner has been suffering from multiple physical problems for a long time, but judicial authorities do not accept her requests for hospital transfer. The informed source told HRANA that this political prisoner is "held alongside inmates of common crimes without observing the principle of separation of crimes" and is "suffering from pterygium, kidney and gastrointestinal diseases," and also "experiences severe pain in the side area." Zahra Jalalian, from Maku, was arrested in 2007 and in 2009 was sentenced to one year in prison for "illegal exit from the country" and to death for "moharebeh due to membership in opposition groups (PJAK)." Her death sentence was confirmed by the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court but was later commuted to life imprisonment. Ms. Jalalian has stated that during her detention, she was subjected to torture methods such as whipping on the soles of her feet, punches to the stomach, head banging against the wall, and threats of rape. The United States has repeatedly condemned the ongoing and systematic violations of the rights of prisoners and citizens in Iran by the Islamic Republic government.
