Shahruz Joyani, Veteran Iranian Journalist, Passes Away at 73

Shahruz Joyani, a veteran Iranian journalist and editor, passed away at the age of 73 in Tehran after battling illnesses including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Mohammad Reza (Shahruz) Joyani was born in 1950 and began his career in literature and cinema at the magazine 'Cinema-ye Azad.' News sources report that Shahruz Joyani died on Sunday, November 6, in a 'nursing home' in Tehran. In 1979, while he was in charge of the cinema section of the newspaper Ayandegan, he was arrested following the newspaper's suspension and spent some time in prison. His contributions include participating in the publication of the periodicals 'Farhang-e Novin' and 'Cinema-ye Novin,' as well as the monthly magazines 'Mofid' and 'Payam-e Emrooz,' 'Ayneh,' and the weekly 'Iran Emrooz.' Hassan Namakdoost, a journalism instructor, described Shahruz Joyani as a 'first-class journalist' who was instrumental in bringing together the editorial team of 'Payam-e Emrooz' and publishing this popular magazine in the 1990s. Nima Afshar Naderi, a journalist, noted that 'Iranian media has a history that cannot be found on Google,' and in response to the passing of this veteran journalist, he wrote that Joyani had tried to 'revive the press' in the years before the 'spring of press reform,' but 'it did not happen.'
