Sharp Increase in Cases of Fentanyl Poisoning Among Children in the U.S.

As the President of the United States works to prevent the entry of the drug fentanyl into the country, a new study shows that cases of fentanyl poisoning among American children have significantly increased over the past decade. Researchers examined over 3,000 non-fatal fentanyl poisoning cases in children under 19 reported to poison control centers, finding that between 2015 and 2023, these cases increased by 1,194 percent. The research, published in the American journal 'Substance Abuse and Alcohol,' indicates that intentional misuse or abuse of fentanyl has risen from 1.26 percent to 39.2 percent over the past decade. Among the two age groups studied, teenagers aged 13 to 19 were more exposed to fentanyl than children under 12. In 2023, there were 379 poisoning cases in children under 12 and 514 cases among teenagers aged 13 to 19. According to the research findings, 65.7 percent of poisoning cases in teenagers were due to intentional substance abuse. This group was also more likely to use fentanyl concurrently with substances such as cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, and alcohol. In contrast, 81.7 percent of children under 12 were unintentionally exposed to fentanyl.
