Shigeru Ishiba Elected as Japan's New Prime Minister

Shigeru Ishiba, the former Minister of Defense of Japan, won the majority of votes in the second round of elections to lead the Liberal Democratic Party and was introduced as the new head of the party and the next Prime Minister of the country. The 67-year-old politician managed to defeat Sanae Takaichi, Japan's Minister of Economic Security, with a score of 215 to 194. Takaichi, a well-known Japanese nationalist, could have become the country's first female leader if she had won. According to media reports, after Ishiba's victory was announced at the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters in Tokyo, he smiled, took off his glasses to wipe his tearful eyes, and bowed repeatedly to his congratulating colleagues. According to Kyodo News, Ishiba will be introduced as the next Prime Minister of Japan in the parliamentary session next Tuesday. Kishida will resign from the Prime Minister's position in September. The new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party faces the challenge of rebuilding the party and restoring voter trust in the country. His victory, in which he called for the establishment of an 'Asian NATO' during his campaign, may provoke anger from China. U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, congratulated Ishiba on social media and expressed eagerness to work with him to strengthen the alliance between the two countries. This intra-party election was held following Fumio Kishida's resignation from the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in recent months, forced to step down due to rising prices and political scandals. Kishida's successor in the Liberal Democratic Party will face challenges such as rising living costs, escalating geopolitical tensions, and the potential return of Donald Trump as President of the United States.
