Shin Bet: Hezbollah's Plot to Assassinate a Former Israeli Military Official Foiled

On Tuesday, September 17, the Israeli internal security agency Shin Bet announced that it had foiled a plot by Hezbollah to assassinate a senior former military official from Israel, which was planned for the coming days. Shin Bet did not disclose the name of the official but stated that a device connected to a remote detonation system, which utilized a mobile phone and camera, was discovered and seized. This device was intended to be used by Hezbollah from Lebanon. The Israeli internal security agency mentioned that this action was similar to a plot by Hezbollah in Tel Aviv that was thwarted a year ago. Since last September, Israel and Hezbollah, a group supported by the Islamic Republic, have been exchanging fire along the Lebanese border, which is considered the most intense of its kind in two decades. This border conflict was in support of Hamas, another group backed by the Islamic Republic, which attacked Israel last September. As a result of the Hezbollah-Israel conflict, tens of thousands of people from cities and villages on both sides of the border have left their homes and residences. Simultaneously, Israel announced the addition of 'safe return' for its citizens to their homes near the border with Lebanon as part of its official war objectives. On the other hand, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he outlined the war objectives in a nighttime meeting with his security cabinet. Israel claims it prefers a diplomatic solution to keep Hezbollah away from the border of the two countries. Hezbollah has stated that only the end of the war in Gaza can halt the conflicts, while efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza after months of negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. have yet to yield results. Following the security cabinet meeting, Israeli television networks reported that Netanyahu is close to a final agreement to replace Defense Minister Yoav Gallant with Gideon Sa'ar. Sa'ar, a former justice minister, has criticized the government's war policies in recent months, stating that decisive actions should be taken against Israel's enemies, including the Islamic Republic of Iran. He has also criticized the efforts to reach an agreement with Hamas to end the conflicts in Gaza. Meanwhile, Gallant has prioritized a deal that includes the exchange of Israeli hostages in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners. In his role as defense minister, he has often taken an independent stance against Netanyahu. Yoav Gallant has described Netanyahu's goal of achieving a 'complete victory' in Gaza as futile and has called for a clearer plan for post-war governance in which Palestinians can manage Gaza. Last year, Prime Minister Netanyahu dismissed Yoav Gallant over his opposition to the controversial judicial reform plan but later reversed his decision. Opposition to this plan led to unprecedented street protests in Israel. The Israeli Defense Minister stated that the opportunity for a diplomatic solution with Hezbollah is running out, and negotiations between Gallant and Austin regarding the lost 'time' for advancing a 'diplomatic' solution with Hezbollah are ongoing.
