Shirin Ebadi Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian human rights activist and writer, has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The 56-year-old lawyer residing in Tehran received the Nobel Prize for her efforts in advocating for the rights of women and children. The Nobel Committee announced this news on Friday in Oslo, stating that the award was given in recognition of Ms. Ebadi's efforts to support and defend the rights of women, children, and refugees in Iran and other places, as well as her courage in pursuing this goal despite threats to her safety. The committee expressed hope that the awarding of the peace prize would send a message to countries around the world about the importance of the struggle for freedom and the rights of women and children. In Paris, Ms. Shirin Ebadi told reporters that she views the award as a positive sign for human rights and democracy in Iran and hopes this event will inspire all those who strive for this cause. On Friday, Ms. Ebadi called for the release of all political prisoners in Iran. Having defended many political prisoners, she emphasized the necessity of their freedom at a press conference in Paris. Ms. Ebadi, who is a Muslim, defended her religion against accusations of being incompatible with Western human rights concepts, stating that there is nothing in the Quran that contradicts human rights. Ms. Shirin Ebadi is the first Iranian and the eleventh woman to receive the $1.3 million Nobel Peace Prize. She was selected from among 165 candidates, including Pope John Paul II and Václav Havel, the former President of Czechoslovakia.
