Shooting at a Kentucky High School Leaves Two Dead and 17 Injured

A 15-year-old boy entered Marshall County High School in Kentucky, USA, with a handgun on Tuesday, February 21, and opened fire on students. During the shooting, two people were killed and 17 others were injured. Police arrived on the scene, apprehended the shooter, and took him away in handcuffs. This is the first deadly armed attack in the United States in the new calendar year. Students at Marshall County High School fled in panic to other locations, with some seeking refuge in a McDonald's located a mile away from the school. Mitchell Garland, who works near the school and sheltered between 50 to 100 students, said, "The kids were running in fear on the highway. Their effort was to get as far away as possible." Ambulances, police cars, and special forces quickly arrived around the school, and federal officials responded rapidly to the incident. Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader in the Senate from Kentucky, sent his staff to the scene. Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky also quickly headed to the site of the incident. Worried parents abandoned their cars on both sides of the intersection near the school and searched for their children. According to the governor, a female student was killed on the spot, and a male student died shortly after being shot at the hospital. Matt Bevin stated that the shooter has been arrested and charged with murder. The Kentucky police have not yet released the shooter's identity or any information about his possible motive. The governor remarked, "This is a wound that will take a long time to heal. For some residents, it will never heal." Five of the injured were airlifted to Nashville, located 120 kilometers from the incident site. The Kentucky State Police reported that there are no other suspects at this time in the police investigation. With 23 days into the new calendar year, this is the first deadly attack in the United States. Marshall County High School is half an hour away from Paducah High School, which experienced a shooting in 1997 that resulted in three deaths and five injuries. The governor had previously stated in a statement, "It is unbelievable that this happens in a small community like Marshall County." The shooting occurred on Tuesday morning when students had gathered at 8 AM. Several eyewitnesses reported that they were discussing sports when they suddenly heard gunfire. Some students called their families after fleeing the scene to inform them that they had safely left the area.
