According to police, the shooter is an adult white male who has been apprehended. The Associated Press reported that the shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon, July 7, at the Capital Gazette newsroom. A police source stated that the shooter used a shotgun in the attack. The motive for the shooting is still unclear. Phil Davis, a reporter for the newspaper, tweeted after exiting the building that the shooter began firing at employees after shooting through the glass door of the office. In another tweet, he continued, 'There is nothing more terrifying than hearing people shot while you are under your desk and then hearing the shooter reload.' Mr. Davis stated in an interview that while he and his colleagues were hiding under their desks, the shooter suddenly stopped firing. CNN reported that Bill Krampf, the acting police chief of Anne Arundel County, announced in a press conference on Thursday that the incident left at least five dead and several others severely injured. According to police, the shooter was apprehended while hiding under a desk in the newspaper's newsroom, having placed his gun on the ground. Police officials have not yet released the name of the shooter. Following the shooting, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, expressed condolences to the victims and their families in a tweet. The Capital Gazette is one of the oldest newspapers in the United States, having started its operations in 1884 under the name 'Evening Capital.' In 1981, the newspaper changed its name to Capital, and in 1994, the company that owned it launched one of the first news websites in the U.S. called 'Capital Online.' According to the Baltimore Sun Group, the current owner of the newspaper, Capital has about 67,000 daily readers, which increases to 83,000 on Sundays.
