Shooting at Foreigners in an Italian City; Six Injured

According to the Associated Press, the motive for the shooting is still unclear, but the city of Macerata, where the shooting occurred, is still reeling from the shock of the murder and dismemberment of a young Italian woman earlier this week, suspected to be the work of a Nigerian immigrant. Italian police have stated that all the victims of this incident are foreigners and later confirmed that the shooter, a 28-year-old Italian with no criminal record named Luca Traini, has been apprehended. The news agency ANSA reports that he had run for local office last year representing the Northern League party but was unsuccessful. A video released by the Italian newspaper Il Resto di Carlino shows a man with a flag draped over his shoulder being arrested by Italian police in the city center, just a few meters from his vehicle, which he had exited to flee. Some news sources have claimed that he gave a fascist salute upon his arrest, but the Associated Press states that there is no evidence of this gesture in the released footage. Police had warned people to stay indoors during the shooting. Local authorities ordered public transport to be halted and kept students in schools, which were open on Saturday. Romano Carancini, the mayor of Macerata, stated that during the two-hour shooting, six foreigners were injured, with one in critical condition. He confirmed that all the victims are black and acknowledged that the timing of these two incidents raises the suspicion of a connection between them. The shooting occurred just days after the murder of an 18-year-old Italian woman named Pamela Mastropietro, which has intensified the anti-foreign sentiment in the Italian electoral campaign. Matteo Salvini, the leader of the anti-immigration Northern League party, has used this murder as a pretext, promising to expel 150,000 immigrants within his first year if he wins the parliamentary elections. The dismembered body of this Italian woman was found in two suitcases on Wednesday, two days after she went missing. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the victim's car was seen near the location where her body was discovered and close to the residence of the suspect in her murder. The parliamentary elections in Italy are scheduled to take place in mid-March.
