Shooting at US Consulate in Istanbul

Turkish media reported that on Monday, two assailants opened fire at the US consulate building in Istanbul, leading to a confrontation with police. According to Anadolu Agency, police have arrested one person in connection with the attack, but no further details about the arrest have been released. Associated Press, citing the independent Dogan news agency, reported that one of the assailants was a woman who was injured during the clash with police and is currently in custody. Just hours before this shooting, a bomb exploded at a police station in Istanbul, injuring ten people, seven of whom were police officers. The blast was powerful enough to cause part of the three-story police building to collapse. Police stated that the assailants detonated a car bomb near the station during the nighttime attack. After the bomb explosion, gunfire ensued, resulting in the deaths of two assailants. These attacks coincide with Turkey's operations against PKK forces and its tensions with ISIS. Last month, reports indicated that Turkey targeted Islamic State positions in Syria. Turkey has also agreed to allow the US-led coalition against ISIS to use its bases. On Sunday, the US announced the deployment of six F-16 fighter jets to Incirlik Air Base. In southeastern Turkey, reports indicate that on Monday, an explosion from a roadside bomb killed four Turkish law enforcement personnel. According to AFP, the explosion occurred in Silopi, a district in the Kurdish Şırnak province, which borders Iraq and Syria. Turkish media attributed the bombing to Kurdish militants. In a separate incident, the Turkish army stated that Kurdish militants targeted an army helicopter in the Bitlis district of Şırnak, killing one soldier. The helicopter was hit by a rocket shortly after takeoff, injuring at least seven other soldiers. Last month, Turkey arrested 1,300 individuals during operations to collect 'terrorism suspects,' including members and supporters of the PKK, ISIS, and other groups.
