Shooting at US Embassy in Beirut; Lebanese Army Responds; Attacker Injured

Reuters reported that today an armed individual fired shots towards the US Embassy in Beirut. The Lebanese Army stated that they shot the attacker, injuring him, and he was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. The Lebanese Army mentioned that the attacker is a Syrian citizen and that soldiers searched the area after the incident. The US Embassy announced that gunfire with light weapons was reported near the embassy entrance this morning. According to the embassy, the building and staff are safe. A security source told Reuters that one member of the embassy's security team was injured in the attack and that Lebanese soldiers shot the attacker in the abdomen. The US Embassy is located in northern Beirut in a very secure area with multiple checkpoints along the entrance route. The embassy moved to this location after a suicide attack in 1983 that killed over 60 people. In September, gunfire occurred near the embassy, but no injuries were reported. In October, a large number of protesters gathered in front of the embassy during the early days of the Gaza war, and Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. Since October of last year, Lebanon has been the scene of clashes between Hezbollah, a group supported by the Iranian government, and Israel. Tens of thousands on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border have been displaced due to fears of an escalation of the war. The United States has made diplomatic efforts to reduce violence on both sides of the border. The war between the Israeli army and the Islamist group Hamas began after a terrorist attack on October 7 by this group, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, that resulted in the massacre of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. In this terrorist attack, 253 individuals were taken hostage and brought to the Gaza Strip, with about 120 of them still held captive by Palestinian militants. Fires have intensified in border areas between Israel and Lebanon; Iranian proxies have increased their attacks. Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel; Houthi rebels in Yemen also claimed to have targeted the port of Eilat. Hamas had planned attacks on the Israeli embassy and a US military base in Germany. A car explosion in Damascus left one dead; two Hezbollah members were killed in a drone attack attributed to Israel.
