Shooting Near Israeli Embassy in Jordan; Attacker Killed by Police Fire

Jordan's state news agency reported that an individual who shot at a police patrol near the Israeli embassy in Amman, the capital of the country, was killed by police fire, and three officers were injured. Petra news agency reported early Sunday, December 4, citing the Jordanian Public Security Directorate, that the shooting occurred in the 'Rabiah' neighborhood where the Israeli embassy is located. According to this report, the attacker fled the scene after shooting at the police patrol and later exchanged fire with officers when he was surrounded. The Jordanian Public Security Directorate stated without providing details that the officers fired after the attacker shot at them. Arab media and social networks have released videos showing the presence of security forces and vehicles, and the sound of gunfire in the street. According to Reuters, during the police search operation, residents of the neighborhood were asked to stay indoors. The Rabiah neighborhood, where the Israeli embassy is located, has previously witnessed anti-Israeli protests following the Gaza war. Jordanian officials usually allow anti-Israeli protests but have warned that they will respond to attempts to attack the Israeli embassy. Reports indicate that during several protest rallies in Amman held after the Gaza war, demonstrators have repeatedly chanted slogans about closing the Israeli embassy and canceling the peace treaty between the two countries. Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but according to Reuters, many citizens of the country oppose this treaty. Jordan has a population of about 12 million, many of whom are of Palestinian descent or whose parents fled to the country after the 1948 conflicts.
