Shooting Near US National Security Agency Building Leaves Several Injured

Several people were injured in a shooting near the National Security Agency building in Fort Meade, Maryland. According to US media reports, one person has been arrested in connection with the incident, and law enforcement has taken control of the area, stating that the threat has been resolved. Reuters reported that a spokesperson for the NSA confirmed the injuries and that a highway near the military facility, located 30 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., was closed. The FBI announced via Twitter that agents have been dispatched to investigate the incident. Local media reported that the NSA spokesperson indicated the area is now secure. ABC News quoted a spokesperson for the agency saying, "The NSA police and law enforcement are investigating an incident that occurred Wednesday morning at the parking gate of the agency. The situation is under control, and there is no further security threat." Earlier reports indicated that three people were injured in the shooting. The local fire department and police also announced on Twitter that they were responding to a potential shooting incident. CBS News aired images of a black vehicle near the Fort Meade parking gate, with its windshield shot out. Fort Meade is a military facility housing the NSA headquarters, the Defense Intelligence Academy, and Cyber Command. CBS News images showed the vehicle stopped near a guard booth and in one of the protected access routes to the parking area. The NSA is one of the main intelligence and espionage agencies of the US government, monitoring and intercepting communications, including internet communications, to oversee threats and hostile activities against the US. A White House spokesperson stated that details of the incident have been reported to Donald Trump. In March 2015, two individuals in a vehicle attempted to breach the heavily guarded gates of the NSA building. When the drivers ignored warnings from guards, officers fired at the vehicle, resulting in the death of one of the occupants. According to media reports at the time, the vehicle's occupants likely entered the wrong route after a night of partying and drug use, heading towards the NSA building.
