Shooting Suspect Arrested in Utrecht, Netherlands

The police chief of Utrecht, Netherlands, has stated that the suspect in the deadly shooting on Monday, March 18, which left three dead and nine injured, has been arrested. The police chief did not provide further details about the main suspect. However, media reports indicate that the suspect is a 37-year-old named Gokmen Tanis, born in Turkey and raised in Utrecht. He fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle. According to Dutch media, this individual is described as having 'mental instability' and has a significant criminal record, including drug dealing and sexual offenses. There has not yet been an official report regarding his motive for the shooting, but media investigations have raised the issue of 'personal revenge' related to a sexual assault case involving Gokmen Tanis. A Dutch prosecutor has also stated that the shooting may have occurred due to family disputes. Anadolu Agency reported that the shooter initially shot at a relative in the tram and faced intervention from other passengers. Earlier, Dutch media had reported that anti-terror units were dispatched to the area, and police were searching for the suspect or suspects. Reports indicate that the shooting occurred in a tram in a residential area, and several helicopters were dispatched to transport the injured to the hospital, with several of the injured reported to be in critical condition. An eyewitness told reporters that they saw a woman lying on the ground at the shooting scene in the tram, with a struggle occurring around her and several men fleeing the scene.
