Significant Progress in Recent Iran Nuclear Negotiations with the 5+1 Group

A member of Iran's nuclear negotiation team stated that "significant progress" has been achieved in the recent negotiations in Geneva regarding the Islamic Republic's nuclear activities. According to a report published by the state news agency IRNA on Thursday, March 7, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, a senior member of the Iranian negotiation team who traveled to Denmark, said in a meeting with the Danish Foreign Minister: "In the recent Geneva negotiations, significant progress was made, and we hope to take more positive steps in next week's negotiations." The last round of bilateral negotiations between Iran and the United States ended on Tuesday, March 4, in Geneva, with both sides expressing a positive assessment, as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stated that progress has been made. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also mentioned that general agreements have been reached, with only details remaining. Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the Iranian government spokesman, stated on Wednesday, March 6, that "we are time-bound, and the negotiations must conclude by April 1 of next year at the latest." Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the six world powers on Wednesday evening, March 6, of having "surrendered" to Iran. On the same day, Ed Royce, Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized John Kerry for the sensitive nuclear talks with Iran, claiming that Iran is obstructing international inspectors' investigations into its nuclear bomb-making activities. In response, the U.S. Secretary of State stated that Iran has adhered to all commitments of the first phase of the agreement, which led to the resumption of talks. The Iran nuclear negotiations with the six world powers must lead to a political agreement by March 31, and both sides will have until late June to establish the groundwork for a final and comprehensive understanding. Mr. Takht-Ravanchi further stated on Thursday that "some members of the 1+5 group consider the unjust sanctions as leverage and are unwilling to lift them, while these sanctions must be lifted unconditionally." The immediate lifting of all Western sanctions against Iran has been declared one of Iran's demands in the nuclear negotiations with the 5+1 countries. Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also stated on Wednesday that "our negotiating partner must understand that the end of these negotiations and the result of the agreement should be the lifting of all unjust and illegal sanctions." At the same time, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, predicted on February 18 that international sanctions against Iran would remain even if a nuclear agreement is reached. The Deputy Foreign Minister for Europe and America condemned terrorist actions "in all their forms," including actions by terrorist groups in the region and other countries, including Denmark, during his meeting on Thursday. He added: "Today, terrorism is a serious threat to the global community, necessitating international cooperation to combat it." Hours earlier, an attack on a meeting at a café in Copenhagen left one dead and three injured.
