Six Political Prisoners in Evin Prison Await Uncertainty on Charges of 'Baqi'

Human rights sources have reported the uncertainty surrounding six political prisoners accused of 'baqi' in Evin Prison. According to Hrana, the news agency of human rights activists in Iran, Vahid Bani Amiri, Pouya Ghobadi, Babak Alipour, Abolhasan Montazer, Mohammad Taghavi, and Asghar Daneshfar were arrested last year in a joint case in various cities including Tehran and Chaldoran. These six citizens have been accused of 'baqi' and 'conspiracy against national security' for their membership and collaboration with an opposition group. The charge of 'baqi' can lead to severe penalties, including execution. According to the Iran Human Rights Center, five of these prisoners, Vahid Bani Amiri, Pouya Ghobadi, Babak Alipour, Abolhasan Montazer, and Mohammad Taghavi, have been accused of collaborating with the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization. Abolhasan Montazer, Mohammad Taghavi, Pouya Ghobadi, and Babak Alipour are considered former political prisoners with a history of conviction and imprisonment. The Human Rights Campaign in Iran has described 'baqi' as one of the 'groundless charges' used by the Islamic Republic to suppress opponents and religious forces in minority regions. Currently, several citizens, including Toumaj Salehi, Nasim Gholami, Naib Askari, Marzieh Farsi, and Forough Taghipour, are either imprisoned on charges of 'baqi' or face execution sentences. Qasem Baadi, a lawyer, states that judges have more leeway in issuing death sentences for the charge of 'baqi' than for other charges.
