Sixtieth Anniversary of March in Washington Led by Martin Luther King Held

Thousands gathered on Saturday, August 27, at the sixtieth anniversary of the march led by Martin Luther King Jr. at the National Mall in downtown Washington. According to the Associated Press, speakers at the gathering stated, "A country still grappling with racial inequality has yet to fulfill its dream." They referred to the words of Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech during the approximately 250,000-person march "to Washington for Jobs and Freedom" in front of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. In that speech, Martin Luther King Jr. repeatedly expressed hope that he would witness equality and the inherent equality of all humans. This march is considered one of the largest demonstrations for racial justice and equality in U.S. history. The civil rights movement peaked when then-President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, declaring racial segregation in public places illegal. Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize for his activism. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, by a gunshot from a motel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had gone to support a labor strike. James Earl Ray, a pro-segregationist, confessed to his murder and spent his life in prison. At the time of his death, Martin Luther King Jr. was 39 years old and had predicted his assassination the night before: "I have seen the promised land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land." The legacy of Martin Luther King, leader of the civil rights movement for American society, was highlighted in remarks by President Biden and Kamala Harris at the tenth anniversary ceremony of the unveiling of the Martin Luther King memorial. Biden stated that Americans must pay attention to Martin Luther King's legacy. Harry Belafonte, a renowned American singer, actor, and civil rights activist, passed away at the age of 96.
