Snow and Arctic Cold Place 70 Million People in the U.S. Under Storm Warning

Dozens of millions of residents in the eastern United States are preparing for snowfall on Sunday, followed by dangerously cold temperatures. This weather condition will affect a large part of the country, from the Northern Plains, including up to the tip of Maine. The Northern Plains include North Dakota, South Dakota, northern Nebraska, western Minnesota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of the Mid-Atlantic region, which will continue until Monday morning. Forecasts indicate snowfall of up to 15 centimeters in these areas. Preparations related to these warnings will be implemented on Sunday evening in New England, where some areas in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut may see up to 25 centimeters of snow. Mark Schenard, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland, announced that in the coming days, nearly 70 million people in New England and the Mid-Atlantic will be under various storm-related warnings. Major cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston will receive several centimeters of snow on Sunday night, but the heaviest snowfall will occur outside of major cities. Schenard stated, "Road conditions in many areas, from Washington to the entire I-95 corridor and then into the interior, will be dangerous on Sunday day and night. After this system passes, severe cold will set in. By Monday morning, driving on any road that has not been plowed or salted will remain dangerous." However, the snowfall is just the beginning of a tumultuous week of weather. Half of the eastern United States will face the coldest temperatures of this winter and perhaps in several years. From the Rocky Mountains to the Northern Plains, temperatures will be below normal from Sunday through next week. It is expected that temperatures in these areas will drop to between -34 and -48 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday. In some parts of North Dakota and Minnesota, wind chill has brought temperatures down to -40 degrees Celsius. Severe cold is also expected to affect areas including Oklahoma and the Tennessee Valley. The forecast for extreme cold on Monday in Washington, D.C., the capital, has led to the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Donald Trump being moved indoors to the U.S. Capitol. This cold wave will reach the southern U.S. early in the week, where nearly 30 million people may witness a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain starting Monday. This unusual weather will impact areas from Texas to northern Florida and the Carolinas. The effects of this system are expected to begin in Texas on Monday night and spread to the Gulf Coast and southeastern U.S. by Tuesday and Wednesday.
