Snow and Blizzard Bring Eastern U.S. to a Standstill

Heavy snow and blizzards have brought the eastern regions of the United States, including New York City, to a standstill since Monday evening. The National Weather Service had warned 60 million residents in the northern and eastern parts of the country to expect unprecedented heavy snowfall and blizzards, advising them to stay indoors and refrain from driving. The Governor of New York declared a ban on all vehicle traffic, except for emergency services, starting at 11 PM Eastern Time. Urban and intercity train services and buses have been suspended until further notice. Additionally, over 7,000 flights in the northeastern U.S. have been canceled, with airport officials stating that flights may not resume until Wednesday. Schools were closed on Monday, and businesses and offices in the northeastern U.S. closed earlier than usual. Weather officials had specifically warned about heavy snowfall and blizzards in New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Many residents in these states went shopping to stock up on food, gasoline, and other necessities. According to the latest reports, although the National Weather Service had predicted snowfall between one to three meters in some states, this forecast did not materialize in many areas, including Philadelphia, where only light snow fell, as well as in Rhode Island, Boston, and New York, although officials stated that the New England region would face the worst conditions. Nevertheless, the Mayor of New York has warned that this is the 'calm before the storm' and advised residents not to be overly optimistic. The schedule for intercity trains in the region, particularly between New York and Washington, has also been altered, with a reduction in the number of services.
