Some Healthcare Facilities in the U.S. Reintroduce Mandatory Mask-Wearing

Healthcare facilities in four states in the United States have made mask-wearing mandatory again due to a rise in COVID-19 cases, seasonal flu, and other respiratory illnesses. Facilities in New York, California, Illinois, and Massachusetts have enforced mask usage among patients and hospital staff. According to Reuters, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, the Health Commissioner of New York City, stated that mask mandates have been reinstated in 11 public hospitals, 30 health centers, and 5 long-term care facilities. He mentioned that the intention behind this mandate is to prevent a repeat of the experience faced during the onset of the Omicron wave in 2021 and its spread among frontline healthcare workers. The latest weekly data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that from December 17 to December 24, over 29,000 patients were hospitalized due to COVID-19 across the United States, marking an increase of more than 16% compared to the previous week. The CDC also reported over 14,700 cases of influenza during the same period. Previously, the mandatory mask policy during the COVID-19 pandemic sparked a wave of controversies and angered those who rejected medical advice, deeming masks ineffective in preventing disease spread. CDC statistics show that over 1.1 million Americans have died from COVID-19, a rate higher than that of other wealthy countries. There is also a noted increase in respiratory diseases in China, Iran, and other countries; Dr. Attari stated that there is no new virus to confront. The World Health Organization has requested more information regarding the rise of respiratory illnesses in China. The UK has approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech.
