South Korean Court Lifts Arrest Warrant for Ousted President

A court in South Korea on Friday, March 8, lifted the arrest warrant for Yoon Suk-yeol, the ousted president of the country, paving the way for his release from prison. According to Reuters, citing South Korea's Yonhap news agency, Yoon, who was arrested in mid-January on charges of rebellion and imposing a temporary martial law, can now be outside of prison during his trial. In response to this court decision, Yoon's lawyers stated, 'The rule of law is still alive in South Korea,' arguing that the arrest warrant issued on January 19 was invalid due to procedural flaws in the prosecutors' request. Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law on November 30, claiming that this action was necessary to eradicate 'anti-government elements.' However, after six hours and following the rejection of the martial law by parliament, he revoked his order. He claimed he never intended to fully implement martial law, a claim his opponents rejected. A few weeks later, the opposition-led parliament impeached Yoon for violating constitutional duties through the declaration of martial law. In addition to this case, he is facing a separate criminal trial. He was imprisoned on January 16, becoming the first South Korean president to be arrested on criminal charges during his term. The impeached South Korean president was arrested, and investigators asked the acting president not to prevent Yoon's arrest.
