Spain, Ireland, and Norway Recognize the Formation of a 'Palestinian State'

Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognized the formation of a 'Palestinian state' on Tuesday, an action that provoked anger from Israel. According to Reuters, Madrid, Dublin, and Oslo stated that they are seeking to accelerate efforts to ensure a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. These three countries hope their decision will encourage other European Union countries to follow suit. The Danish parliament also rejected a proposal to recognize a Palestinian state on Tuesday, supporting the government's view that the necessary conditions for such recognition do not exist. Israel, increasingly isolated after more than seven months of conflict with Palestinian militants Hamas, which governs Gaza, reacted angrily to the European moves. The Egyptian state-affiliated Cairo News network reported on Tuesday that a senior official announced that an Egyptian security delegation, in coordination with Qatar and the United States, is working to reactivate negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The official stated that Egypt has taken a firm stance regarding the reopening of the Rafah crossing with Gaza, saying it will only be reopened with Palestinian and international parties. Israel had previously seized the Gaza side of this crossing earlier this month. Israel's punitive action against Spain included banning consular services to Palestinians in Jerusalem, and Israeli tanks entered the center of Rafah despite international opposition.
