Spanish Media: Main Suspect of 'Deadly Barcelona Attack' Killed

Reports indicate that Spanish police have confirmed the death of Moussa al-Kabir, the main suspect in the deadly Barcelona attack, in the town of Cambrils. The attack involved a van driving into pedestrians in Barcelona, resulting in 13 deaths. Following this deadly attack, police initiated a search for the driver of the fleeing van. According to Reuters, hours after the deadly attack in Barcelona, Spanish police opened fire on the occupants of a vehicle that attacked pedestrians in Cambrils, killing five individuals. Cambrils is located 120 kilometers from Barcelona. Spanish newspapers have now reported, citing police, that Moussa al-Kabir is one of the five individuals killed in Cambrils. Giuseppe Luis Trapero, the head of the Catalonia police, had previously stated on Friday that the main suspect in the Barcelona attack may be among those killed in Cambrils, but he could not confirm this. Reuters cites a Spanish police official stating that the five individuals who attacked pedestrians in Cambrils were armed with knives and machetes and wore what appeared to be explosive belts that were not real. In the vehicle attack on pedestrians in Cambrils, a woman was killed and several others were injured. It is also reported that a police officer was injured in this incident. The head of the Catalonia police stated that investigations are currently focused on an explosion at a house in the town of Alcanar, southwest of Barcelona, on Wednesday. Police believe the attackers were preparing explosives for an attack in that house, but the explosion on Wednesday forced them to change their plans, leading them to carry out smaller attacks due to the loss of their munitions. So far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the attacks on Thursday in Barcelona and Cambrils. Three of the detainees are Moroccan, and one is a Spanish citizen from the Melilla region. This area is considered part of Spain but is located north of Morocco. A judicial official has also stated that arrest warrants have been issued for four suspects linked to the Thursday attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. According to Reuters, the attack on Thursday in Barcelona is the deadliest attack in Spain since the 2004 incident in Madrid, where Islamist militants killed 191 people and injured over 1800 by bombing three Madrid subway stations.
