Special Prosecutor Issues New Indictment Against Trump Related to 2020 Election 'Interference'

The new indictment against Trump presents four charges and is structured based on a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the immunity of presidents for certain behaviors and actions while in the White House. According to Jack Smith, the special prosecutor, the new indictment includes the same previous criminal charges against Trump but limits the allegations against him following the Supreme Court ruling that granted broad immunity to former presidents. The retained charges include 'conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding' and 'conspiracy against voters' rights. Following the Supreme Court's ruling on Trump's 'limited immunity,' the documents of the allegations in the new indictment against him, to which he had previously pleaded not guilty, have been reduced from 45 pages to 36 pages. The new indictment states that Trump engaged in these 'alleged conspiracies' to change the election outcome while acting as an ordinary citizen and not as president. It mentions that although Trump had 'no official responsibility related to the certification process of the election results, his personal interests as one of the candidates necessitated that he be declared the winner of the election.' The filing of this new complaint against Trump comes shortly after the special prosecutor requested a federal appeals court to reinstate the case against the former president regarding the allegation of retaining classified documents at his personal residence. According to Jack Smith, a judge's decision that dismissed the prosecution of Trump in that case 'is inconsistent with the long-standing approach of the Department of Justice,' and therefore the case should be revived.
