Spread of Deadly Disease in Congo; Possible Poisoning from Contaminated Water

A mysterious disease that has spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent weeks has claimed at least 60 lives, raising global concerns. Amid various hypotheses about the source of this disease - including attributing it to bats - Mike Ryan, an infectious disease specialist and director of emergency operations at the World Health Organization, stated that the outbreak seems to be linked to "some form of poisoning." He added that in the village where the outbreak is more widespread, those who fell ill had used a water source. Experts believe that if this disease is related to poisoning, it will be easier to control. The outbreak of this deadly disease in Congo has raised global concerns that a new infectious pathogen, similar to the Ebola virus first observed in this African country in 1976, may have jumped from an animal host to humans. The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has further fueled these concerns. Some specialists suggest another possibility is that arbovirus-carrying mosquitoes, like those causing diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya, may be responsible for this illness. Reports indicate that diagnostic methods for these types of viruses in Congo are limited. So far, over a thousand cases of the new disease have been reported across the Equateur province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 141 cases also reported in the monitored Basankusu area. Initial laboratory findings have ruled out Ebola and Marburg; however, half of those tested were also infected with malaria. Further tests for meningitis, influenza, and typhoid are planned as potential causes of this deadly disease. The World Health Organization states that the symptoms of this disease are widespread, including fever, headache, chills, neck stiffness, muscle pain, joint and body pain, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea. Health experts believe that this mysterious disease is likely caused by several known pathogens that have combined to become deadly. A similar event occurred in September 2023, known as "Disease X," which the World Health Organization identified as a combination of several known respiratory diseases intertwined with malaria and malnutrition. It is still unclear whether these new outbreaks have a common origin or not.
