State of Emergency Declared in Ferguson, USA Following Heavy Shootings

In heavy shootings that occurred in Ferguson, USA, during the anniversary of the death of a young Black man, city officials declared a state of emergency on August 10. This measure was implemented to prevent a recurrence of violence and clashes during the anniversary ceremony of Michael Brown's death, an African American youth. Police stated that they opened fire in response to a man shooting at them. The individual was severely injured. According to Reuters, the prosecutor has charged this individual, who is currently in the hospital, with offenses such as 'shooting at law enforcement officers' and set a bail of $250,000. Steve Stenger, the senior administrative official of St. Louis, of which Ferguson is a suburb, said the emergency status is to prevent potential harm and damage to individuals and their belongings. The police reported that the Sunday shooters began firing after mutual shootings between two groups of 'rioters.' One of them then faced four police officers in a parking lot. The police stated that the suspect, identified as 'Tyrone Harris,' shot at their vehicle and was severely injured in response to police fire. St. Louis police indicated that the shooting groups were not part of the protesters but rather 'criminal gangs.' Harris's father told Reuters that his son was unarmed and was fleeing the scene to save his life. The police claimed that the injured individual shot at them, while his father insisted he was unarmed. The Ferguson protests, during which heavy shootings occurred, began early Sunday on the anniversary of Michael Brown's death and not only in Ferguson but also in other cities across the United States, citizens participated in similar demonstrations. In Ferguson itself, police also participated in the march that began from the site of Mr. Brown's death. Michael Brown was an 18-year-old who lost his life in a police shooting last August. He was unarmed, and his death sparked a wave of protests in the U.S. against what is termed 'police violence with racial undertones.'
