Statement from Karroubi's Family Regarding 'Deliberate Disruption of Treatment Process' for the House Arrested

The family members of Mehdi Karroubi, a prominent figure from the 2009 protests currently under house arrest, have issued a statement accusing a representative of the Ministry of Intelligence of 'deliberately disrupting the treatment process' and 'preventing the medical follow-up of those under house arrest.' This statement was released on July 28, shortly after reports emerged about the deteriorating health conditions of Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi, another prominent figure from the 2009 protests who, along with his wife Zahra Rahnavard, is also under house arrest. In the statement, the government of Hassan Rouhani and the Ministry of Intelligence, alongside what is referred to as 'the ruling authority' and 'the dysfunctional judicial system,' are described as 'responsible for the lives' of those under house arrest. The Karroubi family claims that the representative of the Ministry of Intelligence has created 'multiple obstacles for the house-arrested individuals and harassed the families of Karroubi and Mousavi' since the beginning of his tenure. It is stated that this representative has a 'defined mission' to 'disrupt the treatment process, prevent the medical follow-up of those under house arrest,' and 'gradually take the lives of Karroubi and Mousavi.' The Ministry of Intelligence has not responded to these claims. The statement also criticizes President Hassan Rouhani, stating that if he is 'not committed to accountability' regarding the lifting of house arrest due to other priorities, he is still 'obligated to respond to the illegal and inhumane actions of his agents.' The Rouhani administration has yet to react to these statements. Previously, the Iranian president had stated in cases such as student protests and slogans focusing on the freedom of Zahra Rahnavard, Mehdi Karroubi, and Mir Hossein Mousavi that 'the government is committed to all the promises made to the people' and 'to achieve our goals, we need to create internal consensus.' However, there has been no change in the situation of house arrest over the past years. Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi Karroubi, the leaders of the 2009 protests, have been under house arrest for more than six years. In addition to domestic and foreign figures and international officials, calls for their release have also been made by several political figures within Iran. Some, like Ali Motahari, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, have stated that the continuation of house arrest is at the request of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. The judiciary has stated that the house arrest of these three individuals was ordered by the 'Supreme National Security Council.' However, Hassan Rouhani, who is also the head of this council, denies the existence of such a resolution.
