Statistical Report from Amir Kabir Newsletter on Student Suppression; Over Seventy Thousand Students Participated in Nationwide Protests

According to a report published on Wednesday, June 6, by the Global Student Assembly (G.S.F), over 70,000 protesting students participated in the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement during the fall of 2022, and more than 3,789 students were suppressed in various ways. Part of this report, prepared by Amir Kabir Newsletter and published on the Global Student Assembly's website, states that from September 2022 to March 2024, over 804 students have been arrested. The report also mentions the issuance of over 300 student statements and the suppression of more than 58 professors. Amir Kabir Newsletter obtained some of this information through reports that were "leaked" from the Security Department of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. According to this information, a total of 570 protests were held across all universities in Iran during the nationwide protests of 2022, of which 539 protests took place in public universities and 31 in private universities. The leaked statistics from the Ministry of Science's Security Department indicate that the total number of participants in all protests in the fall of 2022 exceeded 70,141 students. Additionally, students from universities in Tehran province had the highest participation, with 24,890 students (38%). From September 2022 to the end of March 2024, over 804 students, including 598 male and 206 female students, were arrested. Amir Kabir University (Tehran Polytechnic) and Allameh Tabatabai University each had the highest number of detained students, with 115. During the nationwide protests in the fall of 2022, at least 281 students were suspended, with Tehran University having the highest number at 88, followed by Malayer University with 47 and Yasouj University with 32. Additionally, at least 22 protesting students from Mazandaran University were issued exit bans preventing their legal departure from Iran. More than 58 professors from Iranian universities have been suppressed in various ways, including suspension, expulsion, and arrest, with the highest numbers from Islamic Azad University with thirteen professors, Tehran University with eight, and Shahid Beheshti University with seven. Another part of the report states that over 116 security departments in Iranian universities, in collaboration with disciplinary committees and physical security units, have been responsible for identifying and dealing with protesting students in university environments and referring them to the Ministry of Intelligence and the IRGC Intelligence Organization outside the university. From November 2022 to March 2024, in collaboration with organizations such as the Faraja Intelligence Organization, Tehran Provincial Intelligence Organization, IRGC Intelligence Organization, Student Basij Organization, Faculty Basij Organization, Ministry of Science's Security Department, and the IRGC's Tharallah Headquarters, over 3,789 students were suppressed in various ways. Additionally, a statement from a group of students from the Social Sciences Faculty at Tehran University announced that the suppression of female students under the pretext of hijab has significantly increased in the past year, with "over fifty female students from this faculty" summoned to the disciplinary committee in the past year, and "in many cases, they have been summoned more than once." According to this statement, before the initial meeting of the disciplinary committee, students were forced to attend another illegal meeting in the "Steel Building" and were subjected to psychological pressure and, in some cases, threats and intimidation to obtain commitments from the students. The pressures and interventions of Iran's security institutions in universities, as well as the crackdown on protesting professors and students, intensified after September 2022 and following the onset of nationwide protests.
