Strong Protest from Families of Syrian Casualties Against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Several Telegram channels published videos on Thursday, June 1, showing a number of people who identify themselves as families of casualties in Syria strongly protesting against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his entourage during their visit to the graves of these casualties. In the two videos released, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the former president of Iran, along with Morteza Tamadon, the former governor of Tehran, are surrounded by individuals who introduce themselves as families of those killed in the Syrian civil war, referred to in Iran as 'Defenders of the Shrine Martyrs.' These individuals, who have come to the Behesht Zahra cemetery to visit the graves of their deceased family members, criticize Ahmadinejad for rejecting the command of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and demand that he and his entourage leave the site. In parts of these videos, the criticism from these individuals is met with responses from Ahmadinejad and Morteza Tamadon. Ahmadinejad accuses the protesters of being 'uninformed' and states, 'Since you are unaware, I will not say anything to you.' A woman in one of the videos, referring to her husband who was killed in the Syrian war, tells Ahmadinejad, 'They went so that you and your kind do not cause grief to the Master [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei].' Morteza Tamadon, in response to the critics and protesters urging Ahmadinejad to obey the orders of the Supreme Leader, asks them, 'Are you the guardian of the Master, that you speak this way?' He tells the protesters, 'You are not aware of what you are saying.' The protests and criticisms from these individuals are likely related to Ahmadinejad's registration for the twelfth presidential election in Ordibehesht this year, which he participated in contrary to the Supreme Leader's advice. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had previously advised Ahmadinejad not to participate in that election, even publicly announcing this recommendation in one of his lectures. Initially, Ahmadinejad accepted this advice and announced that he would not participate in the election and would not support anyone, but later, with the announcement of Hamid Baghaei's candidacy, Ahmadinejad supported his candidacy. Ultimately, on April 12 of this year, Ahmadinejad, along with Hamid Baghaei and Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, registered for the election at the National Election Headquarters, but the Guardian Council disqualified both of them. During his presidency, Ahmadinejad had a disagreement with Ayatollah Khamenei over the resignation or retention of Heydar Moslehi, the Minister of Intelligence of the tenth government, in April 2011. This disagreement led him to abstain from work for eleven days in protest. Previously, in 2009, despite a clear and written order from Ayatollah Khamenei to Ahmadinejad to dismiss Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei from the position of First Vice President, Ahmadinejad resisted implementing this order for a week.
