Students from Two Universities: The Murder of Amir Mohammad Khalighi is the Result of Government Ineptitude

In response to the killing of Amir Mohammad Khalighi, a 19-year-old student at the University of Tehran, by thieves, students from two universities issued separate statements on Tuesday, February 30, criticizing the "lack of security" in society and the "ineptitude and inefficiency" of the Islamic Republic's government. According to the Telegram channel "United Students," the student council of Beheshti University and a group of students from Tabatabai University in Tehran emphasized that they would not remain silent in the face of "this oppression and injustice," demanding "immediate, thorough, and decisive action" from officials regarding this "heartbreaking crime." The Beheshti University student council condemned the murder of Amir Mohammad Khalighi following a "brutal attack by armed thieves" and described it as a "clear indication of the deterioration of law enforcement and security conditions around university environments and the increasing threats to students' lives." This student organization emphasized that maintaining security for universities and students is only possible through dialogue, constructive interaction, and acceptance of students' legitimate demands. Meanwhile, a group of students from Tabatabai University, during a gathering to commemorate Amir Mohammad Khalighi, attributed his murder to the consequences of the "domination of a weak and ineffective political structure" and the government's negligence regarding the danger of "lack of security" for students. They stated in their declaration that the murderers of Amir Mohammad Khalighi should not be limited to street thieves, emphasizing: "The killer is a system that has sacrificed security for its own ineptitude and inefficiency and is instead focused on suppressing civil society." The gathering at Tabatabai University added: "The law enforcement agencies that are ostensibly responsible for maintaining security have long strayed from their primary function and have become tools for suppressing society." They insisted: "We will not remain silent in the face of this oppression and injustice, and we will not allow this crime to be buried in silence. Our demand is to end this vicious cycle and corrupt system; we no longer want to pay the price for your incompetence." Amir Mohammad Khalighi, a 19-year-old undergraduate business management student at the University of Tehran, lost his life on the evening of Wednesday, February 24, due to knife wounds inflicted by "robbers" near the university. The Greater Tehran Police claimed on Tuesday, February 30, that five individuals had been arrested in connection with the "murder" case of Amir Mohammad Khalighi. Mohammad Shahriari, the head of the Tehran Criminal Court, stated that according to the "confessions" of the suspects, their motive was "theft." The murder of Amir Mohammad Khalighi has sparked widespread reactions in Iran, with student protests at the University of Tehran continuing over the past few days. In this context, the "No Executions on Tuesdays" group, consisting of prisoners protesting against executions in 36 prisons across the country, deemed the murder of Amir Mohammad Khalighi suspicious and held the government responsible for the incident. Protesting students at the University of Tehran also chanted during a gathering and march on Monday, February 29, against the authorities' negligence regarding student security and the expenditure on suppressing their individual freedoms and imposing the government's mandatory hijab on women, shouting: "One by one, hijab enforcers, not a single guard." The student councils of the country also emphasized in a statement that "the lives of students are not only not a priority for university officials, but they hold absolutely no importance in university policymaking."
