Suicide Attack on Chinese Embassy in Kyrgyzstan Leaves One Dead

A suicide attack with a bomb-laden vehicle targeted the Chinese embassy in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday, September 9, resulting in one death and three injuries. According to reports from the French news agency, the Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister stated that the attack on Tuesday morning claimed the life of the attacker and three embassy guards. The Russian news agency Interfax reported that all three injured were Kyrgyz nationals. Reports indicate that the attacker rammed the bomb-laden vehicle into the gate of the Chinese embassy complex and detonated it near the residence of the Chinese ambassador. No group has yet claimed responsibility for this suicide attack, which the Prime Minister described as 'terroristic.' However, the British newspaper The Guardian speculated that China might point fingers at 'Uyghur militants' as responsible for the attack. The Uyghur ethnic minority resides in the Xinjiang region of China, across the Kyrgyzstan border. The Guardian cited a regional China expert who noted that the bomber specifically targeted the Chinese embassy, which is located outside the city center. The newspaper further mentioned that since 2014, when Uyghur extremists carried out several attacks against civilian targets, including a bombing in a market in central Xinjiang, the Chinese central government has initiated actions it calls the 'People's War on Terror.' This so-called 'People's War' has resulted in hundreds of deaths and 'thousands of detentions.' In contrast, critics of China's policies argue that the central government has created an atmosphere of fear, repression, and oppression in the Xinjiang region in response to attacks from this minority.
