Suicide Attack on Educational Center in Kabul Leaves 48 Dead

Afghan government officials reported that at least 48 people were killed, most of whom were students, in a suicide bombing at an educational center in the Shia neighborhood of Kabul on Wednesday, August 15. According to AFP, the educational center named 'Mahdi Mow'ood' is located in the west of Kabul, and the explosion occurred in a classroom filled with students preparing for university studies. A police spokesman in Kabul stated, 'Around 4 PM today, a suicide bomber detonated explosives attached to his body inside the Mahdi Mow'ood educational center. As a result of the explosion, 48 people were killed and 67 were injured, most of whom are students.' The spokesman confirmed that the death toll from this attack may rise. It is unclear how many students were present at the time of the explosion. One student who witnessed the attack said that about one hundred people were in the educational center at the time of the incident, but officials have not yet confirmed this number. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, quickly condemned the attack in a statement. The Ghazni battles began on Thursday evening with a Taliban assault and the capture of most areas of the city. However, experts believe that the Taliban achieved a military and psychological victory against the central government in the Ghazni operation, proving that they can control a provincial center near Kabul for several days. The recent fall of an operational base of the Afghan army to the Taliban, in which at least 17 soldiers were killed, was another blow to government forces, whose morale has been weakened due to rising casualties. Experts say the current situation indicates that the Afghan army, four years after taking over the responsibility for the country's security and despite improvements in its capabilities in recent years, is still not ready for this task. According to responsible officials, at least 100 government forces have been killed in the Ghazni battles, and a similar number of civilians are estimated to have lost their lives. The escalation of violent attacks occurs just weeks after a nationwide ceasefire was announced between the government and the Taliban in June, which temporarily calmed war-weary civilians. At the same time, Afghan and U.S. government forces have intensified their attacks on fighters from the 'Islamic State' group, and the Taliban has also increased its attacks on this group.
