Suicide Attack on Power Plant in Samarra Leaves Seven Dead

A suicide attack on a power plant in the city of Samarra, Iraq, which occurred on Saturday, September 2, left seven dead and more than ten injured. The Islamic State group, ISIS, claimed responsibility for this deadly attack in an online statement. According to AFP, three individuals dressed in 'security personnel uniforms' attacked the power plant early on Saturday, and one of them detonated an explosive vest. The other two were shot down by guards. AFP reports that seven people were killed and '12' were injured as a result of this attack. In contrast, the Associated Press reported that the number of injured in this incident, which coincided with the Eid al-Adha holiday, was eight. This news agency quoted an Iraqi military commander stating that two of the attackers were dressed in workers' uniforms from the power plant, while one wore a security personnel uniform. The Islamic State group, ISIS, has faced extensive attacks from various factions in recent months and has lost several of its key bases. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi returned to Mosul on July 9 and declared 'complete victory' in the battle against ISIS militants. Following this victory, the Iraqi army announced on August 28 that after eight days of fighting, it had reclaimed 29 areas of Tal Afar from ISIS, and almost all ISIS militants in this area have been eliminated. Now, the U.S.-led international coalition, along with the Syrian Democratic Forces on one side and the Syrian army aided by Iranian-backed militants and Russian airstrikes on the other, has intensified its attacks to reclaim Raqqa in Syria from the group known as 'the Islamic State.' Samarra is located 125 kilometers north of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.
