Suicide Attack on Shia Mosque in Western Kabul Leaves at Least Four Dead

Afghan government officials say that in a suicide attack on a Shia mosque in western Kabul on Thursday evening, at least four people were killed and five others were injured. According to the Associated Press, the spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Interior stated that Haji Ramadan Hosseinzadeh, the founder of Al-Zahra Mosque and a leader of the Hazara ethnic minority in Kabul, was killed in this suicide attack. The report indicates that the Islamic State group, ISIS, has claimed responsibility for this attack. Najib Danish, the spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Interior, said that when the suicide bomber attempted to enter the mosque, another individual began shooting. However, a police officer outside the mosque prevented the bomber from entering. This police officer was killed in the explosion. Al Jazeera reports that Al-Zahra Mosque in western Kabul is one of the important mosques for Shia Muslims in the city, and many people were present there on Thursday evening due to Ramadan. Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive of the National Unity Government of Afghanistan, condemned the attack on the Shia mosque in a Twitter message. This suicide attack comes amid a series of recent suicide attacks in Kabul. In a bombing of a truck in the diplomatic area of Kabul on June 6, around 150 people were killed and hundreds were injured. This attack was one of the deadliest in the past sixteen years in Kabul. Following this explosion, the Afghan Foreign Minister called for the dismissal of senior security officials in the country. In this context, the Afghan Foreign Minister demanded the removal of senior security officials in the country. Several deadly explosions occurred during the funeral of one of the victims of protests in Kabul, where at least four people were killed in anti-government violent demonstrations. A suicide attack in Kabul left at least 90 dead.
