Support from Two Jewish Senators for the JCPOA

While opponents of the Iran nuclear deal believe that a nuclear Iran could lead to another Holocaust, two American Jewish senators announced their support for the agreement. According to the Associated Press from Washington, Ron Wyden and Michael Bennet, both Democrats, believe that although the nuclear deal with Iran is not without flaws, it is currently the best available option to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. These two senators, who are descendants of victims of Nazi Germany's concentration camps, argue that if the U.S. withdraws from this agreement, it will fall behind, as other countries will lift their sanctions against Iran, leaving the U.S. without an opportunity to monitor Iran's nuclear program. Senators Wyden and Bennet recall what happened to their families in Nazi camps and believe that maintaining the security of Israel and the U.S. is vital, and that a nuclear Iran should not be allowed to threaten Jewish security. The Associated Press quotes Senator Bennet stating that force should be used if necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Senator Wyden also believes that Iran will not adhere to this agreement, asserting that if Iran violates its commitments, serious action should be taken against that country. Critics of the Iran nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, argue that Iran will exploit this agreement for its own purposes and may endanger Israel's existence. In this context, Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, stated on Tuesday that a nuclear Iran could put six million Jews at risk of death. Last month, Mike Huckabee, also a Republican, warned that a nuclear Iran threatens Israel's existence. Both Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee are candidates for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently compared Iran to Nazi Germany and expressed his opposition to this nuclear agreement. However, supporters of the Iran nuclear deal argue that it is currently the best available option and can prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. With the support of Ron Wyden and Michael Bennet for the JCPOA, the number of Democratic senators in the U.S. Senate who support this nuclear agreement has reached 42. Thus, Republicans will not have enough majority to prevent the final approval of this nuclear agreement.
