Supreme Court Nominee Calls Allegations Against Him a 'Fabricated Political Attack'

Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, rejected sexual allegations against him on Thursday, stating that Democratic senators orchestrated this 'calculated and fabricated political attack' against him. According to Reuters, Christine Blasey Ford testified on October 5 before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Brett Kavanaugh defended himself during this session. After Ms. Ford detailed her accusation that Kavanaugh attempted to assault her 36 years ago, Kavanaugh denied the claims, stating: 'I swear today, before the Senate, the nation, my family, and God, that I have not committed this assault.' Kavanaugh, speaking passionately, asserted that he is clearly a victim of a 'ridiculous character assassination.' Ms. Ford, a psychology professor at California universities, testified that when she was 15 years old and Kavanaugh was 17, he attacked her at a high school party in Maryland, attempting to remove her clothes. After her testimony, Kavanaugh took to the podium and stated that he holds no animosity towards Ms. Ford. He continued that while Ms. Ford may have been assaulted at some point by someone, he added that he has never assaulted her or anyone else. Kavanaugh labeled all allegations against him as 'malicious and false' and directed his criticism towards Democratic senators. He claimed that the Democrats initiated this 'calculated and fabricated political attack' after realizing that his nomination to the Supreme Court might be confirmed. Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court stated that these allegations would not deter him from the path he has taken. The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest judicial body and the authority for constitutional interpretation in the country. It consists of nine justices, and one seat became vacant following the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy. In July, Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh, a current federal judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, for this vacant seat. Holding this position is for life, and Kavanaugh's confirmation would mean an increase in the conservative weight in the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on Kavanaugh's qualifications for this high judicial body on October 6. Republicans have indicated that the final vote in the Senate chamber may take place next week.
