Supreme Court Overturns Amir Tataloo's Five-Year Prison Sentence

Amir Hossein Maqsoudloo, known as Amir Tataloo, has had his five-year prison sentence overturned by the Supreme Court of Iran, according to his lawyer. Majid Naqshi confirmed the news to the Fars news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, stating that the singer's sentence had been overturned months ago and they are awaiting a new court ruling. The spokesperson for the judiciary announced earlier this year that Maqsoudloo was sentenced to five years in prison for 'insulting the Prophet' and ten years for 'encouraging corruption and prostitution.' After the five-year sentence was issued, the prosecutor appealed, and the case was sent to the Supreme Court, which accepted the appeal and reviewed the evidence and arguments related to the charges, ultimately canceling the five-year sentence and requesting a retrial. Tataloo was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison. Iranian media reported on December 12 of last year that Turkish police arrested Tataloo due to a 'complaint from the Iranian consulate' in Istanbul for 'insulting members and staff of the consulate.' Following his arrest, Fars news agency reported that Tataloo faced charges including 'operating a gambling house, setting up a betting site, enticing, bribing, or threatening individuals to access obscene content, and encouraging young people to commit crimes against morality and sexual deviations.' The judiciary-affiliated news agency, Mizan, claimed that 'multiple complaints' had been filed against this singer, some from 'teenagers under 18 and their families.' In his last trial session, Maqsoudloo acknowledged that he had 'certainly made mistakes' and apologized as he had in previous sessions. Regarding the drug promotion charge, he claimed he intended to introduce a 'plant-based alternative' for those addicted to alcohol and drugs, adding, 'I accept my mistake.'
