Supreme Court Refuses to Halt Trump's Ruling in Stormy Daniels Case

On Thursday, January 20, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Donald Trump's request to halt his ruling in a court in New York State. This ruling pertains to the conviction of the elected president in a criminal case involving hush money payments to a pornographic film actress. According to Reuters, the Supreme Court, which has nine justices, voted 5 to 4 to deny Trump's last-minute request from this highest judicial authority in the United States to prevent the issuance of his ruling in the state court in Manhattan, New York City. The New York court is scheduled to issue Trump's ruling at 9:30 AM on Friday, January 21. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, both conservatives, along with three liberal justices of the court, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, formed the majority vote in rejecting this request. The majority opinion stated: 'First, claims of violations of evidence laws in the state court of elected President Trump can normally be addressed in the course of an appeal. Second, the burden that issuing a ruling would impose on the duties of the elected president is relatively insignificant, given the court's stated intent to issue an unconditional release ruling following a brief virtual session after conviction.' The presiding judge in the case, Juan Merchan, announced last week that he does not intend to sentence the elected Republican president to prison and is likely to issue a ruling based on unconditional release. This ruling will register a guilty verdict in Trump's case but will not include imprisonment, fines, or judicial supervision. The U.S. Supreme Court made its decision late Thursday after the highest court in New York also rejected Trump's request to halt the ruling earlier that day. Manhattan prosecutors presented a request in the Supreme Court on Thursday morning, opposing Trump's attempt to delay the ruling. Trump's lawyers argued that prosecutors improperly presented evidence regarding Trump's official actions during the trial. They also claimed that Trump, as the elected president during the period between winning the election on November 5 and the inauguration on January 20, is immune from legal prosecution. However, in the case that New York prosecutors presented to the Supreme Court on Thursday, it stated: 'All evidence that the defendant challenged in his post-trial request either relates to unofficial actions that do not include any immunity or is a matter of public record that is not subject to prohibition, as the court has rightly ruled.' Regarding Trump's claim of immunity as the elected president, prosecutors stated that this 'astonishing claim of immunity has no backing from any court.' They argued that 'it is an obvious principle that there is only one president at any time.' Donald Trump was found guilty in May in a case involving 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a pornographic film actress, made in exchange for her silence before the 2016 presidential election. Daniels has claimed that she had a sexual relationship with Trump a decade ago, which he has denied. Prosecutors have stated that this payment was aimed at aiding Trump's chances of winning the 2016 election, in which he defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Trump is the first former president of the United States to face criminal prosecution and the first former president to be convicted in a criminal case. Donald Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
