Suspect in 'Leak of Classified Information' Case of the U.S. Army to Be Tried

Jack Douglas Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the U.S. Air National Guard, who is accused of leaking military secrets and storing ammunition in his bedroom, will appear in court on Thursday, April 25. Federal prosecutors are expected to argue that he should remain detained because he poses a threat to national security. He was arrested two weeks ago at his home in Massachusetts and is charged with violating the Espionage Act, with prosecutors stating that he disclosed classified documents, including some related to troop movements in the Russia-Ukraine war, to a group of online players on the messaging app 'Discord.' They also noted that Jack Douglas Teixeira destroyed evidence in the case and has a history of violent threats online, requesting that he remain detained until trial as he is considered dangerous. Case contents show that he lived with his father and stepmother and kept a gun rack containing several types of firearms just half a meter from his bed. According to a request from Rachel Rollins' office, the U.S. Attorney General, the defendant is undoubtedly a serious threat to U.S. national security, but 'there is evidence that could also pose a physical danger to the community.' Jack Douglas Teixeira's lawyers oppose his pre-trial detention and asked the judge to keep him at home under his father's supervision. They proposed a $20,000 bail, that he be connected to an electronic monitoring device, and that he be prohibited from using the internet without parental supervision. They dismissed the prosecutors' suspicion that 'a foreign enemy could entice Mr. Teixeira and coordinate his secret escape from the United States' as delusional, stating that 'the government has not provided any clear facts to support these claims.'
