Suspect in New York Bombing Arrested; Five Charges Against Ahmad Khan Rahimi

Reports indicate that Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghan-American and suspect in the bombing in Manhattan, New York, and New Jersey, was arrested on Monday following a confrontation with police. According to CBC News, the New Jersey prosecutor's office has filed five charges against 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahimi, one of which is attempted murder of police officers. Another charge against this Afghan-American is possession of an illegal weapon. Early on Monday, New York police released a photo of Ahmad Khan Rahimi and asked citizens to provide any information they had about the suspect. Reports state that at 10:30 AM on Monday, a liquor store owner in Linden, New Jersey, notified police that the Afghan-American suspect was sleeping in front of his store. Police attempted to arrest Ahmad Khan Rahimi at the scene, but he shot at the officers, injuring one of them in the arm. The police pursued Ahmad Khan Rahimi, wounding him in the leg and arresting him. He is reported to have been transferred to a hospital in New Jersey for treatment. On Saturday evening, a bomb explosion in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, New York, left 29 injured, all of whom have since been discharged from the hospital. Shortly after the first explosion, security forces discovered another bomb near Chelsea, Manhattan. Another bomb was found in Seaside, New Jersey, which was detonated by police without causing any casualties. Security officials say that the mobile phone parts used in the bomb that exploded in Manhattan and the one detonated in Seaside were both purchased last year from a store. Security sources have told news outlets that Ahmad Khan Rahimi has traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan over the past ten years.
