Suspect in the Murder of Tupac Shakur, Famous American Rapper, Arrested After Nearly 30 Years

After nearly three decades, the former leader of a street gang has been arrested for the murder of Tupac Shakur, the hip-hop star, in Las Vegas. According to Reuters, Duane Keith Davis, long considered a suspect in the case, was arrested on Friday, October 7, at his home. The prosecution has charged him with murder with a deadly weapon due to his role in leading several members of his gang to shoot Tupac Shakur. This famous American rapper was assassinated in 1996 by unknown assailants on the main boulevard of Las Vegas. Despite police efforts, they were unsuccessful in gathering the necessary evidence, but the case was never closed. In recent years, Davis, during several media interviews and in his memoir, claimed that he was one of the occupants of the vehicle that shot Tupac Shakur. Following Davis's public statements, it was expected that the police would arrest him, but it was unclear what charges he would face. The 60-year-old Davis is being held without bail until his initial court appearance. According to police, after Tupac Shakur and his companions beat Orlando Anderson, Davis's nephew, at the MGM Casino hotel, he decided to take revenge on the rapper. The prosecution alleges that Davis was the mastermind of the crime and, after procuring a weapon, along with his nephew and two others named Terrence Brown and Dinder Smith, discreetly followed Tupac Shakur's vehicle in a white Cadillac. They shot at Tupac Shakur's car at one of the intersections on the main boulevard of Las Vegas, severely injuring the rapper and his companion. Tupac Shakur died six days later from his injuries at the age of 25. The police have not disclosed who fired at Tupac Shakur, but all three of Davis's accomplices have died in recent years, leaving him as the only survivor of the crime. According to the prosecution, the Las Vegas incident was part of the gang conflicts in Los Angeles, which included several hip-hop artists and music industry figures. The disputes among these gangs in the 1990s, especially the rivalry between East and West Coast rappers, were accompanied by many unfortunate events, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. Tupac Shakur is considered one of the most influential hip-hop artists in the world, having sold over 75 million albums, and his name was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. He faced criticism for promoting violence and misogyny in some of his works and encountered numerous legal issues, spending much of the last two years of his life in court, jail, or hospital.
