Sweden: The Islamic Republic has detained a young Swedish citizen

Sweden says a young citizen of the country was arrested in Iran in early January and is currently in detention. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Monday, January 15, that the detained Swedish citizen in Iran is in their 'twenties.' Relations between Sweden and Iran have been strained since November 9, 2019, when Sweden arrested Hamid Nouri for his role in mass executions in the 1980s and the torture of political prisoners. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an email to Reuters: 'Our embassy in Tehran is in contact with [Islamic Republic] officials. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs [of Sweden] is also in contact with the relatives of the detained citizen.' Iran recently announced that it is trying to secure the release of Hamid Nouri, whose life sentence was upheld by a Swedish appeals court on December 19. The Islamic Republic began the trial of Johan Flodros, a 33-year-old Swedish citizen and employee of the European Union's diplomatic service, in late December. He was arrested and imprisoned on April 17, 2022, while on a recreational trip to Iran with friends. Flodros has been accused of espionage for Israel and 'corruption on earth,' a crime that carries the death penalty. Observers link his arrest and prosecution to the Islamic Republic's efforts to secure the return of Hamid Nouri from prison in Sweden. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called for the immediate release of Johan Flodros on December 10. Governments and NGOs worldwide accuse the Islamic Republic of using the detention of foreign and dual citizens as a tool for political extortion in foreign relations. The U.S. State Department recently warned American citizens about traveling to Iran, urging them to avoid travel due to the risks of terrorism, internal unrest, kidnapping, and arbitrary detentions of American citizens.
