Sweden: The Islamic Republic Must Immediately Release Johan Flodros

Swedish government officials on Monday called for the "immediate release" of Johan Flodros, a Swedish employee of the European Union, from prison in Iran. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described Flodros's detention as "completely arbitrary" during a press conference on Monday, December 11, and emphasized, "We demand his immediate release." Tobias Billström, Sweden's Foreign Minister, also stressed on Monday that the Islamic Republic must allow Swedish consular officials to attend the trial of Johan Flodros. Billström told reporters upon arriving at the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Brussels, "The important point in this situation is to protect Johan Flodros's interests, and our main priority is to ensure that a Swedish official from the embassy is allowed to attend the court to ensure that he will be fairly tried." Billström emphasized that all allegations against this Swedish citizen are "baseless and incorrect," saying, "We urge the Iranian regime to release Mr. Flodros so that he can join his family as soon as possible." Josep Borrell, the EU's chief foreign policy official, also called for Flodros's "immediate release" on Sunday, December 10, stating, "There is certainly no reason to keep Johan Flodros in detention." Iranian media reported on Sunday, December 10, that the first court session regarding the alleged "charges" against Johan Flodros, including alleged intelligence cooperation with Israel and extensive actions against national security, had been held. Johan Flodros was arrested on April 17, 2022, while on a recreational trip to Iran with friends, on charges of "espionage." Flodros's family stated that he was detained at the airport upon his return "without any legitimate reason or legal process." Human Rights Watch, on December 8, issued a statement marking the 600th day of this Swedish EU diplomat's detention by the Islamic Republic, calling for his immediate release. According to this organization, while "the Swedish government and the European Union were quietly working behind the scenes for Flodros's release, his case was initially not publicly disclosed. However, the family of this Swedish citizen broke the silence in September and called for increased efforts to free their son." Human rights groups and Western governments have accused the Islamic Republic of attempting to gain concessions from other countries through the detention of individuals on security charges that are, in fact, baseless. The Iranian government denies the political nature of these detentions. Relations between Stockholm and Tehran have soured since 2019 when Sweden arrested a former Islamic Republic official for his role in mass executions and torture of political prisoners in the 1980s. On May 5 of this year, the Islamic Republic executed Habib Chab, a Swedish-Iranian citizen, on charges of what was described as "leading an Arab separatist group."
