Swedish Parliament Unanimously Votes to Recognize IRGC as Terrorist Organization

Members of the Swedish Parliament unanimously approved a proposal to declare the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization by the European Union. This proposal, presented by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Swedish Parliament, was approved on Wednesday, May 10, by all eight parties in the Swedish Parliament, with 349 representatives voting in favor. According to this resolution, the Swedish government is obligated to work towards placing the IRGC on the EU's terrorist list. Markus Wiechel, a member of the Swedish Parliament and the proposer of this initiative, tweeted after its approval: 'Today, when the Swedish Parliament unanimously decided to vote in favor of my proposal to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization, we made history.' In this tweet, which included hashtags such as 'Women, Life, Freedom', 'Iran Protests', and 'IRGC is a terrorist', he emphasized that 'hard work' led to the approval of this proposal, adding: 'Now we will continue the fight to stop the oppression in Iran and to give the fundamental right of freedom to the people of Iran.' Vahid Beheshti, an opposition journalist, also tweeted expressing gratitude for the efforts made for the Swedish Parliament's vote to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization, emphasizing: 'We will not rest until the IRGC is placed on the terrorist list and the Islamic Republic is destroyed.' Requests to list the IRGC as a terrorist group by the EU have so far been unsuccessful. Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, has stated that a court ruling from one of the member countries is a prerequisite for this action.
