Syrian Observers: An ISIS Member Executed His Mother in Public

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that a member of the group known as the 'Islamic State' executed his mother in public for insisting that he leave the group. According to Reuters, the 40-year-old woman had told her son that the US-led coalition would dismantle the 'Islamic State.' She had asked her son to leave the city with her. Reports published on January 7 indicate that this incident occurred in Raqqa, the main stronghold of the so-called Islamic State. The 40-year-old woman was arrested after her son informed ISIS about her comments. Witnesses and local sources stated that the 20-year-old son executed his mother on Wednesday near the post office building where she worked, in front of hundreds of people. The group known as the Islamic State, which controls parts of Iraq and Syria, has executed hundreds of civilians for various reasons. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported in December of last year that ISIS has executed over two thousand Syrian civilians since declaring its 'caliphate.' These executions reached 1,175 Syrian civilians in the last month of the previous solar year. The group has also executed dozens of its own members for attempting to leave the group and flee. In related news, an ISIS spokesman has been injured, and eighteen members of the Islamic State were killed in clashes with Turkish forces. Erdogan stated that the ISIS attack justifies the presence of Turkish forces in northern Iraq. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a bombing on Thursday in Libya.
